WALL PREPARATION

FOR Vinyl GRAPHICS

Surface Requirements

For best results, the wall should be:

  • Smooth and even, with little to no surface variation
  • Properly primed, painted, and cured
  • Free from dust, dirt, and other contaminants

Avoid installing on heavily textured or rough surfaces (e.g. brick, concrete, stucco). These require specialised materials and application techniques.

Surface Repair and Cleaning

Before application:
  1. Repair any holes, cracks, or loose joints.
  2. Sand down chipped or peeling paint.
  3. Clean the wall thoroughly to remove dust, grease, or debris.
  4. Ensure the wall is completely dry before priming and painting.

Priming and Painting

  • Use a primer compatible with the topcoat paint.
  • Avoid matte, silicon-based, Teflon-based, graffiti-resistant, or textured paints, as these inhibit adhesion.
  • Apply paint using a short-nap roller (¼ inch) and, when possible, apply two coats for best coverage.
  • Allow 7–21 days for the primer and paint to dry and cure before applying vinyl graphics.
    • The curing period depends on ventilation and environmental conditions.
    • Proper curing prevents paint removal during installation.
  • When possible, use primer and paint from the same manufacturer, as these are designed to work together and promote strong bonding between the wallboard, primer, and paint.

Common Issues to Avoid

Failure to correct the following issues may lead to poor adhesion or damage during removal:

  • Highly textured or uneven surfaces
  • Weak paint bond or peeling paint
  • Unprimed patched areas
  • Dust or dirt contamination
  • Excessive moisture or condensation behind walls

Pay close attention to walls adjacent to cooling systems, water pipes, or windows, as these can cause condensation or leaks that compromise adhesion.

Final Inspection

Before installing graphics, confirm that:
  • The wall surface is smooth and defect-free
  • Paint is fully cured (minimum 7 days, ideally 21)
  • The environment is dry and at room temperature
  • There are no signs of moisture or surface residue
